The Walter Lantz Foundation Ups Its Gift to LMU School of Film and Television Animation Department

LOS ANGELES, April 22, 2013 — The Walter Lantz Foundation has upped its gift to Loyola Marymount University School of Film and Television’s Animation Department to just over $1 million dollars, making this one of the largest grants the Foundation has ever given a university animation program.

Last year, the Foundation awarded LMU $540,000 that the school used to outfit its animation lab with state-of-the-art digital equipment including computers for LMU’s newly created motion capture stage, a 3D scanner, lighting for stop-motion animation, and upgraded and networked computer workstations. The school plans to use the second gift of $500,000 to continue enhancing the lab, which will be officially named the Walter and Grace Lantz Animation Lab. A portion of the grant will also fund a new MFA graduate animation program emphasizing visual effects.

“Through The Lantz Foundation’s extraordinary generosity, our students are able to remain current with the latest digital technology. We anticipate that the new learning opportunities provided by this gift will speed graduating students entry into the field,” said Stephen G. Ujlaki , dean of the School of Film and Television.

“LMU’s Animation School is making great strides in animation education, and we hope this gift will allow the program to continue its path of success and growth,” said Edward Landry of the Walter Lantz Foundation. ” Walter Lantz was a pioneer, and now future generations of animators will know and be inspired by his story.”

Recently ranked one of the top animation programs in the country, LMU is one of the only film schools in Los Angeles to provide university-level courses in pre-visualization and virtual cinematography, which is the use of computer-generated worlds and characters to achieve shots and camera angles that would be impossible with traditional moviemaking tools.

The Walter and Grace Lantz Animation Lab dedication ceremony will be held at the Walter and Grace Lantz Animation Lab on the LMU campus on May 8^th, 2013.

CPG has been nominated alongside CBS and ESPN3D for a Sports Emmy in the “Remote Technical Production” category for tournament coverage for the last three years in a row.

The tournament, which runs from April 11 to 14, will be broadcast on CBS, ESPN and ESPN 3D.

CAMERON | PACE Group: What are some of the production challenges specific to the Masters?

Paul Tobyansen : We’re constantly trying to frame shots that give a clear view of the action but ensure the camera operator is invisible. Our positions for camera deployment are extremely restricted and our operators are under strict controls on how far they can wander from left to right if using a handheld system.

CPG: How do viewes respond to seeing the Masters in 3D?

PT: People are blown away. When you hear an announcer mention that a putt “breaks left to right,” it’s impossible to get enough detail in 2D to make that sort of distinction. In 3D, you can see how the ball is going to roll; you can see how a golfer needs to hit his putt.

At Augusta, we put monitors in the viewing area so the public can see what we’re doing as we do it. The responses have been overwhelmingly positive. They can see the dimples on the ball and the sweat drip off a golfer’s face. To sum it up, a fan once said, “I felt like I was standing in the front row instead of 40 rows deep.” It’s a very special experience and I’m happy to play a part in it.

WOODS HOLE, Mass., March 26, 2013 — Explorer and filmmaker James Cameron and Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI) have formed a partnership to stimulate advances in ocean science and technology and build on the historic breakthroughs of the 2012 Cameron-led DEEPSEA CHALLENGE expedition exploring deep-ocean trenches. The announcement comes on the one-year anniversary of Cameron’s unprecedented solo dive to 35,787 feet, almost 11,000 meters, to the deepest place on Earth – the Challenger Deep in the Mariana Trench – in the vertically-deployed vehicle he and his team engineered, the DEEPSEA CHALLENGER submersible system and science platform.

Cameron will transfer the DEEPSEA CHALLENGER to Woods Hole, where WHOI scientists and engineers will work with Cameron and his team to incorporate the sub’s numerous engineering advancements into future research platforms and deep-sea expeditions. This partnership harnesses the power of public and private investment in supporting deep-ocean science.

“The seven years we spent designing and building the DEEPSEA CHALLENGER were dedicated to expanding the options available to deep-ocean researchers. Our sub is a scientific proof-of-concept, and our partnership with the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution is a way to provide the technology we developed to the oceanographic community,” says Cameron. “WHOI is a world leader in deep submergence, both manned and unmanned. Partnerships such as this one represent a new paradigm and will accelerate the progress of ocean science and technology development.”

The DEEPSEA CHALLENGER system demonstrated the effectiveness of a human-piloted vehicle as a science platform for investigating the deepest part of the ocean. Due to the extreme pressures of these deep-sea environments and the technical challenges involved in reaching them, ocean trenches are among the least explored environments on the planet. The DEEPSEA CHALLENGER system incorporated innovative solutions to some of the challenges of accessing the oceans depths. Among several of the significant innovations are approaches to flotation, energy storage, camera and lighting systems that enabled Cameron to gather data, samples, and imagery in order to maximize science value from the expedition.

“Jim and his team saw challenges and overcame them with forward, innovative thinking. The technological solutions they developed for the DEEPSEA CHALLENGER system can be incorporated into other human-occupied and robotic vehicles, especially those used for deep-sea research,” says Avery. “We plan to make that happen.”

WHOI envisions a range of uses for the DEEPSEA CHALLENGER system that will bring value to research programs in ocean trenches. For example, WHOI scientists plan to use the DEEPSEA CHALLENGER’s cameras and lighting systems on the Hybrid Remotely Operated Vehicle Nereus, which dove to the Mariana Trench in 2009 and will return to trenches in the Atlantic and the Pacific during the next two years. These systems enabled Cameron to capture high-resolution 3D images of geological processes and species in the Challenger Deep during 13 piloted dives and 19 lander deployments. The full spectrum of applications for these new technologies has yet to be determined -it will take scientists and engineers some months to fully document the system’s component technologies after the sub’s scheduled arrival in Woods Hole early this summer.

Recognizing the power of new technologies, like those embodied in the DEEPSEA CHALLENGER system, to explore and understand the ocean, WHOI recently launched the Center for Marine Robotics (CMR), a novel collaborative model that enhances the development of robotic technologies by bringing together partners from academia, the federal government, and the private sector. The CMR’s scientists and engineers will revolutionize the way people and machines work together in the marine environment and enable new approaches to complex scientific challenges. Jim Cameron will serve on the Center’s Advisory Board.

“We are delighted that Jim has agreed to join the Center’s Advisory Board, a group distinguished by its members’ deep experience and commitment to ocean science,” says Avery. “By virtue of much of his work in the ocean, he is in a perfect position to provide fresh perspectives on the challenges we face. It’s just one manifestation of the kind of sustained partnership developing between WHOI and the Cameron team.”

James Cameron has logged more than 3,000 hours underwater, is a veteran of 85 submersible dives, most of them to depths greater than two miles, and of eight oceanographic expeditions. Beginning with his film The Abyss in 1989, Cameron has advanced underwater cinematography and robotics during the production of numerous features and marine documentaries. In 1995, he made 12 manned-submersible dives to the Titanic wreck for his movie of the same name, which won 11 Oscars, including Best Picture and Best Director, and broke the record for global box office. (Titanic’s earnings have only been surpassed by Cameron’s 2009 film, Avatar, still the box office leader.) In May 2002, Cameron piloted his robotic cameras inside the wreck of the DKM Bismarck, at a depth of 16,000 feet, for the documentary Expedition Bismarck. He has continued to evolve and improve on innovations in fiber-optic-spooling mini-ROV’s, deep-ocean lighting and photographic technologies for subsequent underwater documentaries including Ghosts of the Abyss in 2003, Aliens of the Deep in 2005 and the forthcoming DEEPSEA CHALLENGE 3D. The film utilizes and builds on the 3D technology and camera Cameron systems Cameron and engineering partner, Vince Pace , developed in 1999 and that form the basis of their 3D technologies and services company, the CAMERON | PACE Group.

Cameron is an Explorer-in-Residence at National Geographic and a member of the Deep Submersible Pilots Association. He has contributed to a number of robotic space exploration projects and, for three years, served on the NASA Advisory Council. 3D Product Images Save Big Brands From Costly Photo Shoots

AMPA, FL (March 26, 2013) — Is digital photography now considered “old school” in the world of product imaging? Increasingly, big brands like Whirlpool, Stanley Black & Decker and IKEA are ditching the camera — relying, instead, on computer-generated 3D product imagesto present their latest product launches.

3D images showcase products in photorealistic environments that can be changed and manipulated instantly. This means brands can feature their product in virtually any décor, location, lifestyle or setting — all without having to build a set, source product or hire a photographer.

Because 3D costs less — both in dollars and logistical headaches — it’s catching on with marketers in multiple industries, from consumer products to training to home building.

Linda Garman of Basco, a manufacturer of luxury shower enclosures, explains, “With traditional photography, there was always a risk of being disappointed with the end result. Now, with 3D, if we’re wrong about a color or texture, we can change it. We aren’t stuck having our time and resources wasted.”

Building a traditional set costs upwards of $5,000 to $20,000 and takes weeks to create. 3D set shots, on the other hand, start at around $1,000 and take just days. Eleventh-hour changes that would normally send production teams and budgets into a tailspin are simplified in the controlled 3D environment.

Garman adds, “Our 3D set shots are far more dynamic than anything we could have built in a set or in a home…and ended up costing 25% of what we would have spent on traditional photography.”

But, do 3D images cut quality along with cost? Jenn-Air’s Associate Marketing Manager, Marci Wark, admits she was skeptical at first, “The number one priority for our visuals is that they portray the brand as luxury and super-premium. When I saw samples, I realized that I’d be happy to have 3D set shots represent my brand.”

In 2013, more online and print catalogs will feature 3D images. IKEA says it plans to double its use of 3D images to streamline the production process and keep prices down.

“Digital photos just don’t make sense for every project,” says Mike Lozicki, President and CEO of MediaLab, a 3D agency that’s been working with brands such as Whirlpool, ClosetMaid and Stanley Black & Decker for more than seven years. “Most companies can easily replace 60% of their shots with photorealistic 3D images, reserving intensive photo sessions for key hero shots.”

Many brands also choose 3D images because they can show products from virtually every angle, including cross-sectional views, exploded views and 360 degree product spinners — views that are simply impossible to capture with a camera. Lozicki states, “The lens has limits. Whereas 3D has virtually none.”

Marketers at ClosetMaid agree. “We constantly need to inspire customers with new organization and storage ideas,” explains Valerie Cavallaro, Director of eMarketing. “With traditional photos, we don’t have the ability for do-overs or quick tweaks for new needs. But, 3D images give us control over the final outcome – there really is no comparison.”

EMC Brings the Vatican Apostolic Library into the Digital Age

ROME, March 7, 2013 — EMC Corporation (NYSE: EMC) has today announced that it is providing 2.8 petabytes of storage to help the Vatican Apostolic Library digitize its entire catalogue of historic manuscripts and incunabula (a book or pamphlet printed before 1501). One of the oldest libraries in the world, the Vatican Apostolic Library holds many of the rarest and most valuable documents in existence including the 42 line Latin Bible of Gutenberg, the first book printed with movable type and dating between 1451 and 1455. EMC is supporting the Vatican Library’s goal of preserving in an ISO-certifiable digital format delicate texts vulnerable to deterioration and decay from repeated handling, ensuring that the accumulated knowledge of generations is freely available for future study.

Additional manuscripts being digitized include:

The Sifra, a Hebrew manuscript written between the end of the 9^th Century and the middle of the 10^th, one of the oldest extant Hebrew codes;
Greek testimonies of the works of Homer, Sophocles, Plato and Hippocrates;
The famous incunabulum of Pius II’s De Europa, printed by Albrecht Kunne in Memmingen in around 1491;
The Code-B, one of the oldest extant manuscripts of the Greek Bible, dated to the 4^th Century.
